The Perceptive Portrait

As we photograph others, we also learn more about ourselves. In this workshop, we will begin with a casual comparison of many different types of portraits by respected artists and well-known photographers, exploring the stories told through these images and the critical elements that reveal the subject’s character or essence. Then it’s your turn: using nearly any type of camera, you will employ modest studio lighting and reflectors to integrate the light, composition, and expressions that create the perceptive portrait.

Joel Simon has worked as an editorial and fine art photographer for four decades. His documentary assignments have taken him to nearly every country across the globe. He is as equally at home photographing beneath the ocean’s surface as he is on land. His work has been published in Vanity Fair, Time, GEO, Conde Naste Traveler, Aqua, Chicago Tribune, Sunset, and Skin Diver, and he maintains an extensive portfolio of Stanford University images. He teaches in Stanford’s Continuing Studies program and has taught students in the SPCS Summer Institute and Humanities Institute.
