Writing Out of the Room

October 6, 2020 6:00PM
Writing Out of the Room

This three-session workshop will work with the idea of the interior and exterior self. The writers will start with a guided reflection describing the interior of their bedroom. What hangs on the wall? The color of the room, the furniture, what sits on the dresser drawer or desk. They will describe in sentences what is to be found in their room.

The students will then visualize a favorite outdoor setting, be it a park, a yard, a playground. They will populate the space by listing the things they are likely to see there. Are there trees, is there shelter, are their water fountains or rivers, what wildlife is found there?

The students then will contrast the interior space to the outside space. What do you feel when you are in your interior or exterior space? What do you wish you could put in your outdoor space that is in your interior space and vice versa.

Each one of the prompts is structured to create a finished poem. The students will share work and discuss strategies for revising the work in the second session. The third session will entail a sharing of the finished work and the composition of a group writing project done in the session. This work will take the shape of a virtual walk drawing on the work the students have already done.

NOTE: Class content is intended for ages 13-17.
