Filmmaking: A Brief Introduction to the Moving Image

December 8, 2020 4:00PM
A Brief Introduction to the Moving Image

In this two-session workshop, we will be exploring how to make a film from conception to completion. We will go over sources ranging from movies, short films, internet videos, screening recordings, video art installations, etc—all of which follow the basic structure of shooting and editing, or capturing then organizing.

During this two-part course, students will be instructed on how to shoot and edit a video using accessible resources such as a smartphone, camera, and/or computer; prospective students who do not have access to video-making resources are still encouraged to join.

There will be a brief intro into how a camera works, followed by shooting or gathering footage, which can take many forms such as: setting up scenes, sourcing pre-existing materials (photos or archival footage), recording voice-overs, using music, etc. Then we will go over effective ways to gather the clips and bring them into editing software to create a final video.

Learning about the diverse relationship between video and sound is especially valuable given our current cultural connection to the screen, as making videos can help one digest them too.

NOTE: Class content is intended for ages 13-17.

This online course will be broken into two sessions:

  • Tuesday, December 8, 4-5:30pm
  • Thursday, December 10, 4-5:30pm

Joseph Tuzzolino was born in Kansas City Missouri and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. He works as a video editor with a specific interest in documentary films. Mia Kerin is a project manager, artist, and filmmaker living in New York City.

This event will take place online through Zoom. Prior to the event, registrants will receive a link and password via email, as well as additional instructions if necessary.
