Objects and Meaning Through Mixed Media Collage

December 12, 2020 10:00AM
Objects and Meaning Through Mixed Media Collage

An artist’s practice is driven not just concept, but by the media, objects, and their unique processes of making. In this course, students will strengthen their art-making through the dynamic medium exploration to create a still life collage influenced by an arrangement of small selected objects of significance. Through demonstrations and hands-on activities, students will discover the basics of collage as a medium using found and prepared material. Observational subject matter will be emphasized through topics such as perspective, mark-making, and composition. We will talk about the history of still life and its important context in art history.   Students will work in their homes under a practicing artist to build intention through our artistic decisions and find meaning within our selected objects. How do our artistic decisions metaphorically influence the meaning of our work? Students will be challenged to confidently verbalize ideas through self-evaluation.

Glyneisha Johnson is a multimedia artist born in Dallas, Texas, currently living and working in Kansas City, MO. Johnson completed her Bachelors of Fine Art in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2017. She is a 2020 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award Fellow and a recipient of the 2020 Byron C. Cohen Award. She was an artist in residence at Art OMI in summer 2019 and Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Spring 2020. Johnson’s work celebrates black womanhood and the inherent matrilineal nature of black interiors through collage, drawing, and installation-based photography. Her interior spaces are intimate and disruptive, highlighting desolate truths and overt absences in black life. She has exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions in the United States including SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, GA, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, KS, the Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE, SPIVA Center for the Arts in Joplin, MO, and HAW Contemporary in Kansas City, MO. Johnson’s work is included in several private and museum collections in the United States.
