The Listening Hour at Montalvo Arts Center invites local performing artists to present musical work, from classical to contemporary, in a casual afternoon of performance and conversation. Join us for these intimate showcases outdoors in the Spanish Courtyard or inside the historic Villa. In addition, each event will include a moderated dialogue with the performers as they discuss their practice, musical influences, inspirations, and more.

Beverages will be available for purchase and seating is limited.

Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Ruth Gerson has appeared on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Extra,” PBS, Showtime, HBO, and Lifetime television. As an independent artist, she has released seven albums and recorded with Grammy Award winning producers Rick Chertoff and Jim Scott. Gerson has opened for Dave Matthews Band, Jason Mraz, Darius Rucker, the Indigo Girls, Alison Krauss, and many more. The San Francisco Chronicle praised Gerson as “an underground songwriting master” and The Village Voice (NYC) raves, “With a huge, flawless voice, she makes her ideas sing and every word is welded to the beat!” Gerson lives and teaches singing, songwriting, and performance in Los Gatos and online. She has also produced many tracks for her extremely talented offspring, Hazel and Emma Gerson. Her trio, featuring Mark Brillhart on bass and Dan Ross on drums, has been delighting audiences in the Bay Area since 2015. 

The trio will be performing many of Gerson’s originals and covering some of the group’s favorite songs by Bobbi Gentry, Dolly Parton, Amos Lee, Patty Griffin, Bonnie Raitt, and Aretha Franklin. They will also include a few songs to celebrate the holiday season.

COVID-19 REQUIREMENTS: This event is scheduled indoors inside the Villa; vaccine verification will be required prior to entry. Masks are also required while indoors at all times.
