Originally coming from humble beginnings in Buffalo, New York, jazz fusion pioneers Spyro Gyra have released a mind-boggling 35 albums, garnering platinum and gold records along the way to a career spanning more than 50 years and over 10,000 performances.
Born in Brooklyn, bandleader Jay Beckenstein grew up listening to the music of Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Dizzy Gillespie, and started playing the saxophone at age seven. “The music has elements of Jazz, rhythm and blues, Latin music, and world music,” he says of the group’s sound. “It’s instrumental, it’s improvisational, there’s a lot of teamwork in the band and the music is really honest.”
